Music is alive in everyone!

PIano Teaching Style

With a balance of personal connection and creative study, I teach students to read and interpret written music and to create music of their own. My goals are to inspire each student, to help them unlock their love for the piano, and to provide a solid foundation of music education.

I teach piano lessons to students of varying ages and levels, and have an extensive background with beginners as young as age 6. And while I prefer to take students as beginners, transfer students are also considered on a case-by-case basis.

Lessons are either 45 or 60 minutes in duration, and happen once per week. With beginning students we start with the Faber Piano Adventure series and the Piano Safari series to learn the basics and gain confidence, training the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and the heart to connect to music.

With consistent at-home practice, students learn not only to read music, but to stylistically interpret piano music of differing styles and periods, from Baroque to Contemporary. Our lessons focus on technique, theory, ear training and creativity.

As they move beyond the beginning phases, the music we pick can be diverse; we might pick a piece by Chopin or Debussy, or perhaps some Harry Potter music or some Coldplay or a standard or two. The music we work on as students' skills mature will depend on their musical tastes and special gifts.

Here is a recent review one of my parents left for me when their daughter left to go to college:

"It is hard to know where to start! Stephanie taught my daughter piano for 6 years from age 12 - 18. She is extremely insightful and came to understand my daughter quickly, then skillfully challenged her at exactly the right level through the years. Music came to be a great way of self expression for our daughter and also a way to relieve the kind of stress that sometimes visits during adolescence. Stephanie managed to walk the line of commitment to high standards and understanding that life is busy in the teen years.

She has been, without a doubt, an important part of our daughter's development as a musician and as a person. We are forever grateful to have had her in our lives. (I also took lessons from Stephanie - she is also very patient :) . It is bittersweet that I write this in the past tense - our daughter is going off to college halfway across the country! She would definitely be continuing piano lessons with Stephanie if she were to stay in Seattle. We highly recommend her to any other families seeking a piano teacher for their child. We would also happily answer any questions from any families considering Stephanie as a piano teacher." -Barbara Ford

Why I love teaching piano

Teaching piano is very rewarding. I love seeing the smiles as a child discovers the magic of music-making; how they bound into the studio to show you their exciting progress, or their joyful faces when they ace their recital.

My teaching is goal-oriented and person-centered, and whether it's a student's dream to become a professional musician someday, or they are just getting started on their exploration of the piano, it's an honor to help guide people on their musical journey.

Instrument requirement and practicing

Piano practicing at home may be on an acoustic piano (preferred) or an 88 weighted-key keyboard equipped with a damper pedal. Weighted-key keyboards get louder when you press harder and emulate the sound and touch of a piano.

I encourage students to practice; I give each student weekly practice goals and employ sticker charts and prizes for kids who meet their goals. I also encourage parental involvement in lessons and at home during practice, particularly for the young beginner.

Piano Recitals

I believe performance is a valuable part of music education and hold 2 optional piano recitals each year.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I was fortunate to start piano at age five, continuing on through my music degree at Western Washington University. I'm honored to have studied with some amazing teachers such as Dr. Robert Scandrett and Dr. Edwin LaBounty at Western Washington University and Dr. Myrna Capp at Seattle Pacific University (with whom I study currently).

I am a member of the music teacher's national association (MTNA) and active in the Seattle music teacher's association (SMTA).

My musical world includes not only my lifelong study of piano, but also writing, producing and recording my own music with my current band Like Lightning. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and producer, I've released numerous albums and past performances include such festivals as SXSW and Bumbershoot.

Playing piano helps develop other skills

Piano study can be a vehicle for fostering many valuable life skills that lie outside the realm of musical skill. While the focus of piano lessons is to develop musical proficiency and expressiveness, each lesson is also an opportunity to nurture other positive characteristics such as:

*Sensitivity to nuance
*Good work habits

Endorsements (Thank you!)

"We've loved having Stephanie teach our son to play the piano. He started as an eager 1st grader and, under Stephanie's guidance, is now growing into a Beethoven playing confident 5th grader (with an ample amount of Star Wars music to keep us on our toes). Stephanie finds a strength in her students and nurtures it along in a beautiful way. She is equal parts encouraging, thoughtful, patient, and focused. Best of all, she delights in her students and the joy of music education." - Amy Low, West Seattle

My daughter has been taking piano lessons from Stephanie for over 4 years and she looks forward to her piano lesson every week. Stephanie's enthusiasm for teaching a subject she loves is inspiring. She has a great way with the kids that models a love and respect for piano, for the teaching process and for the student. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a piano instructor." - Jenny Roben, West Seattle

"Can't say enough positive things about Stephanie. Our daughter is nine and in her third year of piano instruction with Stephanie. She has a kind, patient way of instructing while pushing her students to progress. She is a gifted musician herself and actively records and performs, but her priority is teaching piano and her passion for it shows. Her twice-yearly recitals are fun and festive. Our daughter has confidently grown as a musician under Stephanie and is developing an appreciation for all kinds of music as a result." - Heather Ring, Magnolia, Seattle

"Stephanie is a fabulous piano teacher. My child is 9 years old, and can be very emotional. Stephanie is gentle and adjusts the piano lesson to fit my daughter's currant daily mood. My daughter is always smiling after a lesson, no matter how she was feeling before. Stephanie has a calming effect and at same time, is sweet and fun while teaching my daughter the finer points of piano. My daughter, who has no natural talent for music, now plays piano beautifully." - Jill Rainbolt, Queen Anne, Seattle

"Stephanie is such an amazing teacher. I am one of her adult students and she is so great. She is extremely knowledgeable and very patient. I look forward to our lesson every week. She always finds ways to challenge and engage me and I feel as if I've flourished under her guidance. I would highly recommend Stephanie as a teacher and mentor. She is truly extraordinary and I'm so thankful to have found her. "- Ann Patnaude, Queen Anne, Seattle

"Stephanie Emery has been teaching piano lessons to my children piano since 2009. She is really wonderful. The kids love her and are progressing nicely." -Rena Singer, Magnolia, Seattle

"Thank you so much for being such a sensitive and educational piano teacher for our son. I think with your guidance, he has been able to address some of the challenges he faces as a pianist and person in general. Your holistic approach has been so helpful and appreciated." - Bonni Bohn, West Seattle

"Stephanie is wonderful. She is patient with my girls, but at the same time, she is able to push them toward improvement. I highly recommend her!" - Lindsay Salazar, West Seattle

"Stephanie is very patient with children. She is also very fun and truly teaches them to love piano. Both of my children enjoyed lessons with Stephanie for many years until we moved." - Patricia Taraday, Columbia City, Seattle

"Stephanie is an outstanding piano teacher. I had piano lessons with her. She tailored the lessons and chose the music in accordance with my personal style. My piano playing grew beyond my expectations because of her guidance. At a recent piano recital, people thought I played the piano at the level of an instructor. Her lessons are a healthy balance of discipline and fun and I would most definitely recommend her." - Jed Firebaugh, West Seattle
